Julia was born in Cairo, Egypt. Most of the time until she was 16, she lived in Hertfordshire. Her family then moved to Cumbria.

She studied Drama at Manchester University under Hugh Hunt, previously director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

She fell in love with Greece on a research trip to do with the ancient theatres, and lived in Athens for many years. There she married and had two children. She taught English as a Foreign Language and became involved in the publishing of teaching materials.

Later, she began writing supplementary materials herself and has been published by Penguin, Longman Pearson, and Cambridge University Press, among others.

When her second husband (born and bred in Workington) retired from being a diplomat, they settled back in Cumbria and she began working on scripts for theatre and radio. She joined the North Cumbria Scriptwriters in 2005.

Her latest publication is a 30,000 word novel for learners of English as a Foreign Language, Nelson’s Dream (CUP 2008).
